Subject Lines That Get Opened: A Data-Driven Approach

Your Subject Line Decides If Your Email Gets Read
You can write the best email in the world and it means nothing if nobody opens it. The subject line is your one chance to earn that open. I have tested thousands of subject lines over the years and certain principles consistently perform. This is not about tricks or clickbait. It is about understanding what makes people curious enough to click.
Be Specific Rather Than Clever
Clarity beats cleverness every time. 'How We Generated 50 Leads in One Week' outperforms 'You Won't Believe This Marketing Secret' consistently. Specific subject lines set clear expectations. The reader knows what they will learn if they open. Vague or sensational subject lines might get opens once, but they erode trust quickly. Your audience learns to ignore you.

Use Numbers and Data Points
Subject lines with numbers consistently outperform those without. '5 Steps to Reduce No-Shows by 70%' is more compelling than 'How to Reduce No-Shows.' Numbers signal specificity and practical value. They also stand out visually in a crowded inbox. I use numbers in roughly half my subject lines and they reliably outperform the ones without.
Keep It Short, Especially for Mobile
Most people read email on their phones. Mobile screens truncate subject lines after roughly forty characters. Front-load the most important words. If someone only reads the first five words of your subject line, would they still understand the value? If not, rewrite it. Short subject lines also feel more personal and less like marketing.

Test Everything. Trust Nothing Until You Have Data.
What works for one audience may not work for another. A/B test your subject lines on every campaign. Send version A to half your list and version B to the other half. After a few hours, send the winner to the rest. Over time, you build a deep understanding of what your specific audience responds to. This data is more valuable than any best practice list.
