Top 10 Metrics Every Business Should Track

Track the Right Numbers, Not All the Numbers

Early in my career, I tracked everything. Page views. Bounce rates. Social followers. Impressions. It felt productive but it was mostly noise. The businesses that grow fastest track fewer metrics, but the right ones. Numbers that connect directly to revenue and profitability. If a metric does not help you make a better decision, stop tracking it. Here are the ten metrics that actually matter.

Customer Acquisition Cost

How much does it cost you to win a new customer? Divide your total marketing and sales spend by the number of new customers. If you spent ten thousand pounds and got a hundred customers, your CAC is one hundred pounds. This number tells you whether your growth is sustainable. I have seen businesses celebrate revenue growth while their acquisition costs quietly ate all their profit. Track this monthly.

Customer Lifetime Value

CLV tells you the total revenue a customer generates over their entire relationship with your business. If customers spend fifty pounds a month and stay for two years, that is twelve hundred pounds. Your CLV must be significantly higher than your CAC. If it is not, you are paying too much to acquire customers who do not stay long enough. This ratio is the single most important indicator of business health.

Conversion Rate at Every Stage

Track conversion at every stage: visitor to lead, lead to opportunity, opportunity to customer. Small improvements here create outsized results. If your landing page converts at two per cent and you improve it to three per cent, that is fifty per cent more leads with the same traffic. I have helped businesses significantly increase revenue just by fixing one conversion bottleneck in their funnel.

Email Open and Click-Through Rates

Email remains the highest ROI channel for most businesses. Your open rate tells you if your subject lines work and your list is healthy. Click-through rate tells you if your content is relevant. Industry averages sit around twenty per cent open rate and three per cent click rate. If yours are below that, test different approaches. These numbers respond quickly to changes, so you can iterate fast.

Return on Ad Spend

ROAS tells you how much revenue you generate for every pound spent on ads. A 5:1 ROAS means five pounds back for every pound invested. Track this by channel and campaign. Kill underperformers ruthlessly and scale winners. I have seen businesses waste months on ad campaigns that looked busy but generated negative returns. ROAS cuts through the noise.

Customer retention and churn rate metrics with trend analysis over time

Lead Response Time

This is the metric most businesses ignore and it costs them dearly. Research shows that responding to a lead within five minutes makes you dramatically more likely to close them compared to waiting an hour. Yet most businesses take hours or days. If you are not tracking this, start today. Automation can help by acknowledging enquiries instantly and routing leads to the right person.

Churn Rate

If you have a subscription or recurring revenue model, churn rate is critical. It shows the percentage of customers who leave each month. High churn means you are constantly replacing lost customers instead of growing. Reducing churn is almost always more profitable than acquiring new customers. Track it, understand why people leave, and fix the root causes.
